Child and Adolescent Therapy
Today’s youth face numerous challenges that often make it difficult to fulfill their potential. This may include conflict with peers, academic pressure, body image, learning disabilities, depression or identity issues. Individual and family therapy can assist children, adolescents and their parents in understanding these problems, enhancing communication, and developing realistic solutions.
Parenting
Healthy parent-child relationships provide the foundation for children’s ability to feel good about themselves, to get along well with others and to thrive in the world. Many parents have questions or concerns about developmental issues, their parenting skills or their ability to relate well to their children. Family Service staff believes collaboration with parents is an integral part of child/adolescent therapy and that collaboration promotes family functioning.
Emotional Difficulties
Issues of depression, anxiety and low self-esteem can be debilitating and pervasive life struggles. Family Service staff has helped individuals address and resolve difficulties that have adversely affected them much of their lives.
Young Adults/Adults/Older Adults
Adults go through many changes during the life cycle. Young adults are making decisions about career choices, pursuing advanced education or having children. Others in middle age are considering retirement, career changes or struggle with the stress of caregiving. Older adults are often faced with health concerns, lifestyle changes and maintaining independence and optimal functioning. Family Service staff is experienced in helping individuals and families cope with these changes in order to reach their fullest potential.
Substance Abuse and Addictions
Family Service works with individuals with substance abuse or addictions to help them understand how their addiction affects themselves and their family life. We also work with family members who are feeling confused or lost dealing with their loved one’s addiction.
Relationships
Relationships are one of the cornerstones of living full and satisfying lives. Our staff assists couples with concerns about communication, sexuality, intimacy and conflicts. In helping couples enhance their relationships, we often work with the couple together and as needed help each individual explore and understand what unresolved personal issues contribute to difficulties in the relationship.
Life Transitions
Family Service understands that dealing with challenges and transitions at any age is an inevitable part of life. Whether these life changing events involve loss of a loved one, aging, job changes, emerging adulthood, illness or disability, cultural adaptation, relocation, entering preschool or becoming a parent for the first time, people often need relief, support and guidance so that they are not dealing with these transitions alone.
Divorce
During times of marital strain or divorce, it can be very difficult to maintain a balanced perspective, cope with painful emotions and envision a positive future. Family Service provides support for families during different stages of the divorce process as well as for stepfamilies adjusting to new relationships. Developing an effective co-parenting partnership is seen as essential to provide for healthy parent-child relationships, emotional stability and optimal functioning.
